A Note from Nancy

Scribbling and Drawing

Before young children learn to write, they scribble and draw. They learn that making marks on a page carries meaning. There are countless opportunities for children to explore print through play.

Here are some suggestions:

Sketch squiggles in a sandbox with your finger. Play Guess the Letter.
Provide your child with sidewalk chalk to scribble on the driveway.
Play Restaurant and have your child take and write down your order.
Provide your toddler/preschooler with plenty of tools for drawing – chunky crayons, chalk, chalkboards etc.
Let your child take pride in their work. Display his/her work at home on the refrigerator or their bedroom wall!!
